Peter Donovan is a folk artist in the broadest sense of the word. That is, he attempts to make art that is accessible to a wide range of people without considering the commercial viability of the art. His art takes the form of lyrics, melody, harmony, and rhythm — given preferential treatment in that order. His songs shine a light on small things. They point to the Universal by illuminating the Intimate. They are a conversation ’round the ancient fire. There are influences from the singer-songwriters of the 1970s and their indie descendants through the early 21st century, with a hint of Tin Pan Alley.
