January 2021 Assignment

January 2021 Assignment

Write a song in a form you haven’t previously explored, or reinvent one of your existing songs in a different vibe.

Call it a comfort zone, call it a style, call it a rut. It’s easy for songwriters to pigeonhole themselves as creators of a particular type of song. Is it traditional folk or modern folk, traditional country or contemporary country, some kind of blues, rock ‘n’ roll, funk, jazz, etc.?

There’s nothing wrong with embracing a genre, and this assignment isn’t intended to change what you do. Think of it as an opportunity to explore unfamiliar music grooves, or see what possibilities arise when you put a new spin on an old song.

How important is vibe? Here are a few familiar songs that were reinvented by dropping them into different musical styles.
