July Meeting Recap and Other News

Hey songwriters,
Write a hit song. It doesn’t actually have to sell, just sound like one that could.
At the July 1 meeting of Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle, members set those requirements for the optional songwriting assignment at the next meeting 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at Bloomfield Bridge Tavern (4412 Liberty Ave., 412-682-8611). Featured set by Roulette Waves including new member Heather Donovan (roulettewaves.music@gmail.com).
At Tuesday’s meeting, lots of “summer” songs ranging from radiant to dark were performed and discussed by nearly 20 members, followed by 30 minutes of outstanding songs and intimate vocals and piano work by veteran Pittsburgh songwriter Heather Kropf (heatherkropf@gmail.com). Learn about Heather’s new CD “Chrysalis” at http://heatherkropf.com.

Annual album project
Thirty-four members have committed to putting a song on this year’s massive album, the tenth in a series dating to 2005. Recording is underway at Wilkin Audio. The inherent problems of herding cats in mind, please keep upcoming project deadlines in mind — if you don’t, I’ve got a whip and a chair with your name on it. Aug. 22: credits text deadline (song title, songwriter name or names, performers/instruments and professional affiliation emailed to me atjhayes@post-gazette.com). Aug. 29: recording deadline — no kidding, if you’re not done, well, you’re done. Nov. 14: CD release event at the Roots Cellar at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

Retrospective album project
There’s still time for you to help fund the Circle’s 10-year retrospective album project, commemorating a decade of songs by local artists in our unique album series. Blind judging of each of the 10 CDs is underway by members of Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society. One song from each album will appear on the album, which will debut at the Nov. 14 CD release event. To chip in, please click on the GoFundMe link on this website.
