Hey songwriters,
At the final Songwriters Circle meeting of 2019, several good holiday songs were showcased ranging from fun to sentimental to comically irreverent. More time than usual was invested in the group news segment during the Circle’s busiest week of the year.
The first Wednesday of January is New Year’s Day. The January meeting will be held on Wed., Jan 8, starting at 7 p.m. The suggested songwriting assignment is lyrically challenging: Write a song in which every line contains five words.
Friday, CD release event
Due to the closing of Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, the show has been moved.

No more than two accompanists permitted. Each participant may play one song. Participants should arrive as near to 6 p.m. as possible. On arrival find John and get on the performance roster. With no exit deadline at this venue, expect the show to be less hurried than it had been in recent years.
Doors open for guests at 6:30 p.m.
More than ever, we’re going to need volunteers.
- We have a volunteer MC, stage manager, raffle manager and parking lot attendant.
- Requesting volunteers to show up early and help set up chairs, etc.
- Requesting two members to staff the admission booth.
- Requesting several members to bring food (plus plastic plates, cups, cutlery and serving utensils) to sell at a low cost to guests with proceeds donated to the group. At the previous venue, this show routinely drew 65-75 guests. I’m thinking pizza, hoagies, cookies, chips — stuff like that.
- A donation of soft drinks would be appreciated. The Barn is licensed for BYOB. We can’t sell alcohol, but we can serve it and ask for donations. I’ll bring wine and beer left over from my Halloween party, and a cooler of ice. No additional alcohol will be necessary.
- Requesting two volunteers to sell and serve food and beverages.
- Requesting volunteers to stay after the show to move chairs and tables, clean up and set up the room for a children’s event scheduled for Saturday morning.
Sunday, City Mission Christmas Party

The Songwriters Circle provides the entertainment at the annual Christmas party for City Mission, a homeless shelter in Washington, PA, run by the husband of our member Sue Gartland (suegartland@juno.com). City Mission accepts no government funding, raising money through its recycling center and community donations. We bring goofy hats and Christmas song lyrics — our members also perform their original holiday songs — while residents are served a meal and sing along.
Bring friends and family. If you had hoped to do a good deed this holiday season, this is it.
